What better way than to kick off the New Year that getting some miles in with friends and family. Today we drove down to Deception Pass to meet at the Cornet Bay Retreat Center for a hike and to watch a presentation from the PNT crew. As an added bonus I got to see Rudy from the Cascade Hiker Podcast too! I hope to get in some more miles with him this summer.
After everyone (guessing 50 people or so) meet at the dining hall we all headed out for 2.5mi on the Goose Rock Trail. This happens to be the highest point on Whidbey Island at 484ft. It's a nice trail without any technical obstacles. Definitely not the most challenging, but a great beginner hike. Even Kim came with us so that was really nice.
After the hike we had some snacks in the dining hall and then watched a presentation from PNT executive director Jeff Kish. The Pacific Northwest Trail has been in Auden and my sights since last fall when we started learning about it and realized how close to home it was. One of our goals for 2017 is to get in plenty of multi-day backpacking trips. Section hiking the larger trails is really appealing because it gives Auden a way to "mark off" pieces of a much larger goal. While the PCT is by far the most popular the PNT is basically in our backyard so travel time is cut way down. I should also mention that it does have some road walks in it so we'd be much more likely to get Kim to come with us as we knocked out some of those sections. The presentation was great and I had a great chat with Jeff afterwards.
Overall a great trip and I'm super excited to start cranking the miles out in 2017!
